Does 5% sound good to you?

February 27, 2009

My thanks to my daughter, Cheryl, for the below “heads up”

for a better rate.

5% on a checking account is better than most CD’s or Money Market accounts. There are a few strings attached* but not insurmountable ones even for an old dude like me set in my ways. My CPA for many years could find nothing wrong with the offer. Also my friends at Pre-Paid Legal reviewed the documents and could find no reason not to take advantage of their offer. Give it a look and see what you think.

* I was told one lady’s novel approach to meeting the criteria for 12 debit card transactions in a cycle was to go to the store and buy 12 bottles of water and pay for them separately. Kind of gives new meaning to “where there is a will there is a way”. My motorcycle has a small tank and I usually fill up every other ride but to meet the criteria I will fill up after every ride and since I can do it at the pump my $1.20 fill up is not a nuisance for any clerk. If my math is not rusty it could mean about an extra $1200.00 per year on a $25,000 balance – not bad for a little inconvenience.

On a trip to the west coast during the month of June 1999 I visited an aquarium and spent a bit of time watching the pictured rather rambunctious octopus. One of the attendants told me he/she was a real challenge. The octopus escaped several times from his tank. After each escape the aquarium personnel would try a new locking device for the tank. The octopus would observe them each time the latch was secured and figure out how to open it during the night when the staff was absent. I thought about their curious challenge several times after leaving the aquarium and wondered if a combination lock would stop the denizen of the deep. Apparently from the linked article juvenile octopi are often troublesome. As an aside a Park Ranger in Denali Park Alaska told me the same thing about grizzlies. The juvenile bears are the ones that will approach you for no reason just to check you out. Perhaps we can give our juvenile kids a little slack since it appears nature hard wires curiosity and exploration into the genes of some immature life forms; I am hoping to mature soon – Ron
