September 27, 2009A lot of St. Louisans are not aware of the cool historic site just to the north of Springfield, Illinois; it is called Lincoln’s New Salem because he spent his “formative” years there. Today, 9/27/09, I motorcycled up to New Salem and did enjoy the trip and the historic site – you might consider it for one of your inexpensive fall adventures. A “carding” mill. It is animal (oxen or horse) powered and it still actually works (and you thought your high mileage car was the 7th wonder of the world). “Carding” is the step in between raw wool and the spinning wheel. It is sort of like pulling with your hands the raw wool into strings but the mill gets rid of all the lumps so the spinning wheel can turn out exquisite yarn.
