Denali
December 22, 2009 by bikesafeYou might want to take a look at the below post to see the 230 lb wolf before you read this post. In 1996 I took a trip to Alaska and one of the highlights of the trip was Denali park. The first day in Denali I took the obligatory bus ride with forty of my new best friends into the park. The driver stopped and showed us a partially eaten carcass of an elk. It seems the day before right at that very spot a group of wolves took down and killed an elk in full view of the bus passengers. The rangers have a strict code to allow nature to take its course and never interfere with the wild life activities. They led us to believe that applied to man vs. beast also. The second day I drove my rental car into the park alone. I did get a couple of pictures of grizzlies but they were far off and my 35 mm telephoto lens saved the day. I also spotted several wolves across a ravine not too far off the road. So dufus me slammed the car into park and took off towards the wolves that appeared almost as friendly as my Siberian Husky. At first I was pretty far from them (top picture) but managed through stealth (ha) to maneuver closer and got the close up in the bottom picture (sorry it is a bit out of focus but you get the idea). The wolves certainly were no 230 lbs and like I said not too interested in me (maybe their bellies were full)
On the bus ride were a couple of college students that had just trekked through parts of Australia and since we were in Denali looking for animals they started waxing incessantly about the animals they saw in Australia. Soon their pontificating came to the lowly Koala Bears. They implied they were everywhere and really not worth much. If fact they said all the Koalas do is hang around all day and eat eucalyptus leaves and get stoned. To that I replied in a rather loud voice “Oh you mean they are like college students” which bought a roar of laughter from the other passengers and tended to shut up the know it alls.

The Largest Wolf Kill To Date
This Wolf was shot recently in Drayton Valley, Alberta..which is near Edmonton about 3 hours North of Calgary. The wolf weighs over 230 lbs. smashing the previous record of 175 lbs. Wouldn’t want to run into this puppy in the woods. Apparently a bear hunter witnessed this wolf chase off a big black bear at his baiting station
